The 4C marked quite the departure from the norm in the Alfa Romeo range at launch in 2013. The 1.75-litre in-line 4 engine is mid-mounted, with the car built around a carbon fibre tub. This earmarked the 4C as a car with a greater emphasis on lightness and agility than power.
The production version of the 4C was revealed at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, with the first examples arriving on forecourts before the end of the year. With further carbon fibre on the car’s exterior, and heavy use of composites throughout, the 4C truly is a pocket-size supercar.
Much in the vein of cars such as the Lotus Elise, the 4C’s performance is largely found in its handling. It comes alive on race tracks and winding roads, and is an ultra-engaging drivers’ car. However, it is no slouch in a straight-line either. With 237bhp on tap, the 1,118kg Alfa can launch from 0-62mph in just 4.5 seconds. It will continue on to a top speed of 160mph.
The 4C benefits from a dual-clutch six-speed gearbox, controlled with a Formula One-style flappy paddle shift system.
Among plenty of accolades, the 4C claimed the ‘Most Beautiful Car of The Year’ at the 2013 International Automobile Festival in France, and the What Car? Reader Award for “the most exciting car to be launched in 2013”.
